Because I’m a control freak ;-)  I like to review anything that gets added and maintain my primary goals of keeping FreeRTOS a small and simple system.

Well, if you’re a control freak then that’s exactly why you should use CVS. Using CVS doesn’t mean anyone can make commits – it can be set up – and is usually set up this way- so that only authorized people can make commits – but allows anonymous downloads. For maintaining history, revs, branchs, etc. – which most control freaks want – CVS can’t be beat. AFAIK, SourceForge provides CVS free – so, it seems the benefits far outweigh anything else. And it won’t keep FreeRTOS from being small and simple – I guess I don’t understand that. I really don’t see any argument here for not using CVS other than you just don’t want to. It’ll make a lot us that use FreeRTOS happy – I would think – because I have to take your releases and ‘manually’ enter them into my own CVS database which I keep on one of my local servers.  I don’t believe in not using a version control system. Hi John, I actually keep the FreeRTOS source in a ClearCase VOB currently.  It’s getting a bit late now, but will check out the Sourceforge facilities tomorrow to see about transferring it over.  Thanks for your input as always, Regards.

Richard, Sure thing. I’ve taken CVS DB’s and imported to ClearCase – but I haven’t done the reverse.  I don’t know if there’s a straightforward import utility out there somewhere or not – but I would imagine someone has done it before and might have a utility available. CVS is easy enough to use – even if you have to start from a zip archive it’s not that tough. It’d just be nice to have all of the history and revisions in synch. with ClearCase on an import that’d make it a lot less of a hassle so this wouldn’t have to be recreated… Thanks! John W.

I like Subversion (svn) much better than CVS. It is designed to be greatly improved. Sourceforge is just beginning to offer using svn instead of CVS. One thing I like better is using WebDAV–easy way to be able to open files directly from a URL tree using something like kwrite. My most favorite thing though is that you actually can copy and move whole directories. Can’t do that with CVS, just have to manually re-structure a CVS tree.

I agree.  I’ve been playing around with TortoiseSVN (Subversion IDE).  Very impressed.
